GM543 Strategic Organizational Design and Architecture sample papers, unit by unit

Every structure buys one kind of coordination and pays for it with another. GM543 sample papers treat design as choices about grouping, linking and decision rights, then name what each choice costs the organization that makes it.

How this shelf works

Send the exact assignment or rubric from your classroom and a custom sample written to it lands in 24 to 48 hours, the first one free. GM543 is Purdue Global’s Strategic Organizational Design and Architecture course. It centers on designing structure, coordination and decision rights so an organization can actually execute the strategy it has chosen. What GM543 is really about

The chart is the smallest part of the design, and papers that stop there tend to stop early. Grouping is only the first decision: once work is divided by function, product, region or customer, the organization has created a coordination problem it did not have before, and the rest of the design exists to solve it. Linking mechanisms, liaison roles, standing committees, shared measures and integrator positions are what make a chart operate, and they are usually the part left out. Decision rights are the other half. Two organizations with the same boxes behave differently when one lets a regional manager approve pricing and the other does not, and the criteria reward writing that reaches that level.

The second demand is that every recommendation carry its price. Moving to a product structure improves speed inside each product line and immediately makes it harder to keep engineering standards common, and a paper recommending the move without naming that loss has argued only one side. Reorganizations also cost months of reduced output while relationships reform, which is why serious writing states what problem is severe enough to justify one. Fit is the governing idea underneath: a design that suits a stable business with a few large customers is the wrong design for one competing on variety, and the assessments generally supply enough about the strategy and the environment for that argument to be made from evidence rather than preference.

What GM543’s assessments ask for

Early units often open on the organization you work in, asking you to describe its actual grouping and then say what that grouping makes easy and what it makes slow. Middle units typically move through the structural forms one at a time, functional, divisional, matrix and network, usually with a case where the current form has stopped fitting the strategy. An analysis of decision rights turns up in several sections, and that is where the difference between the published chart and the working organization becomes visible. Coordination mechanisms and integration devices appear as their own assignment in many sections. Seminar work tends to collect the reorganizations people have lived through. Later units generally ask for a design recommendation for a named organization, with the transition and its costs written in rather than assumed.

Where students lose points in GM543

Most of the ground goes to the paper that redraws a chart and calls that a design, saying nothing about how the new units will coordinate or who decides what. Second is the matrix proposed as a compromise, which reads as a way of avoiding the choice rather than making it, and which the criteria test by asking who settles a disagreement between two bosses. Third is analysis with no price attached, where every option carries advantages and none carries a loss. Marks also go where the strategy appears in one sentence and is never used again, where span of control is quoted as a number with no reference to the work being supervised, and where the transition amounts to an announcement date.

Using a GM543 sample the right way

Read a sample for the sentence naming what the proposed design makes harder, because weak work omits it and strong work leads with it. Then check whether decision rights appear at all; a design that never says who approves what has described furniture. Look at whether the transition admits the months of reduced output that follow a reorganization. Then design for an organization you can describe accurately, since grouping choices only make sense against work you know. Once your unit brief and its criteria are in front of us, the first example gets written to them at no cost and returns in 24-48h.

How these samples are written

The discipline behind every paper here: the rubric is the outline, each row gets its section, seminar-option write-ups follow their expected shape, and the format layer ships exact. Send your unit's instructions with a request and the sample matches them, revisions included.

GM543 questions, answered

Is structure really supposed to follow strategy?

That is the starting claim rather than the whole answer. Strategy sets what an organization has to be good at, and the design should make that easy to do. But an existing structure also limits which strategies can be attempted, because the capabilities and relationships it built are what you have to work with, and papers acknowledging both directions read as more competent.

How do I write about a matrix without sounding naive?

Say who wins. A matrix asks somebody to answer to two people with different priorities, so the design is only finished once you state how a conflict between them gets settled, whose budget the person sits in, and who writes the review. Submissions that call dual reporting balanced and stop there have left out the part being graded.

What counts as evidence that a structure has stopped fitting?

Symptoms somebody could observe: decisions escalating that ought to be settled locally, one coordination problem handled by a standing meeting that keeps growing, the same work done twice in two units, or customers dealing with several groups that never speak. Naming two or three of those makes a redesign argument concrete instead of preferential.
