HS865 Doctoral Project II: Research sample papers, unit by unit

Where the literature has to make an argument. HS865 sample papers organize sources by what they found rather than by who wrote them, and turn the gap that emerges into a method somebody could run.

How this shelf works

Send the exact assignment or rubric from your classroom and a custom sample written to it lands in 24 to 48 hours, the first one free. HS865 is Purdue Global’s Doctoral Project II: Research course. It centers on building the evidence case that your question is unanswered, then specifying a method precise enough for another person to repeat. Searches like "hs 865 unit 4 assignment example", "HS865 sample paper", and "HS865 unit samples" land on this page.

What HS865 is really about

The proposal argued that a problem is worth solving. This course argues that nobody has solved it, which is a different and harder claim. It cannot be made by summarizing studies in sequence, because a chain of paragraphs each describing one article leaves the reader to do the synthesis. The organizing unit has to be the finding: what is consistently supported, where results conflict and why, which populations have been studied and which have not, what methods the field has relied on and what those methods cannot see. A review built that way produces the gap as a conclusion rather than announcing it in the introduction, and the gap then has evidence standing behind it.

The methodology written here has to be executable rather than defensible in the abstract. Every choice is a commitment the later courses will hold you to, so the design, the population and its boundaries, the recruitment path, the instruments and their psychometric evidence, and the analysis all have to be stated at the level of an instruction. Alignment gets checked repeatedly: an interview protocol whose questions cannot produce the data the analysis requires will not be caught later, it will simply fail during collection. Any theoretical framework belongs in the same chain, doing work in the design rather than sitting in its own section. A method that reads well and cannot be carried out is the failure this course prevents.

What HS865’s assessments ask for

Units generally alternate between building the review and building the method. Search work usually comes first and is often documented, databases, terms, inclusion and exclusion decisions, so the review can be defended as systematic rather than convenient. Synthesis assignments then ask for organization by theme or finding, with disagreement in the evidence explained rather than averaged away. Framework units, where a section uses them, expect the theory to constrain the design. Methodology units typically ask for design, population, sampling, instrumentation and analysis in full, with justification against the alternatives. Most sections also require an alignment check, a table or narrative tying each question to its data source and its planned analysis.

Where students lose points in HS865

The dominant loss is the annotated list wearing the name of a review, where each paragraph reports one study and no claim spans the set. Second is the gap asserted in the opening and never demonstrated, which the criteria treat as the central failure of this stage. Third is a method described at the level of a textbook definition, naming a design without specifying what would actually be done. Marks also go for conflicting findings smoothed over, for a framework introduced and then unused, and for instruments adopted with no reliability or validity evidence. Reviews also lose ground when the search is undocumented, since a reader cannot tell whether the missing studies were absent or simply never found.

Using a HS865 sample the right way

Read a sample's review for its verbs. Sentences that begin with a finding and then cite several studies are doing synthesis; sentences that begin with an author's name usually are not. Count how many paragraphs open with a claim rather than a citation and you have a reliable measure of the review's quality. Then read the method as if you had to carry it out, marking every point where you would have to make a decision the text does not make for you. The first custom sample is free and follows the chapter template your section requires.

How these samples are written

Every sample in this binder is written the way the custom ones are: the rubric decoded row by row, a subject-matched writer drafting to the top band, formatting checked line by line. Purdue Global revises courses; a custom request is always written to the rubric in YOUR classroom, never from a stale template.

HS865 questions, answered

How many sources does a doctoral review need?

Enough to establish the state of the evidence, which depends on the question rather than on a target number. A narrow question with a small literature can be reviewed exhaustively, and saying so is a strength. What draws comment is a review that is large and shallow, or one whose search was never described so the coverage cannot be judged.

How do I show a gap rather than claim one?

Let the organization of the review do it. If the synthesis shows a finding replicated in one population and never tested in another, or a mechanism assumed and never measured, the gap appears as the obvious next question. A gap announced in the introduction and unsupported by the body is the version committees most often send back.

Can the method change after this course?

Changes happen, but they cost time and require committee agreement, so the work is to get the commitments right now. The most common late change comes from an instrument that cannot produce the data the analysis needs. Checking each question against its data source and its planned analysis before the course ends prevents most of them.
