It centers on developing another person through coaching and mentoring relationships, including the boundaries a manager cannot honestly promise. What GM585 is really about
The two words describe different relationships, and the graded work turns on whether you can keep them apart. Coaching works on performance in a defined area, usually within an agreed period, and the person doing it does not need to have done the job. Mentoring works on a career and on judgment, runs longer, and involves access and sponsorship that only somebody further along can supply. Confusing them produces a plan promising career advocacy inside a six-week performance conversation. The second demand sits closer in: what the coach actually says. Graded transcripts and reflections show whether the writer asked something the other person had not already considered, or handed over advice with a question mark attached.
Role conflict is the part most submissions skip. A manager coaching a direct report also decides that person's rating and their next assignment, so anything said in the conversation is on the record whatever anyone promises, and a paper borrowing the external coach's confidentiality rules for a supervisor has described a relationship nobody in it is actually in. Formal programs raise the same problem at scale. Matching, voluntary participation, what the mentor gets out of it and how a pairing ends without embarrassment all decide whether a program survives past its launch event, and the strongest submissions design for the ending as carefully as for the start. Measurement is judged on what changed for the person rather than on satisfaction ratings.
What GM585’s assessments ask for
A self-assessment of listening and questioning typically opens the term, with the result interpreted rather than simply reported. A coaching conversation, either scripted or held and then written up, lands in the middle of the term in many sections, and the reflection afterward is where the marks sit. Feedback assignments recur, usually supplying an employee whose performance has slipped and asking what you would say and in what order. Several sections want a development plan built with somebody rather than for them. Mentoring program design appears late in many terms, with matching, preparation and evaluation all expected. Boundary scenarios show up wherever the relationship turns into something else, and seminar work tends to gather the mentors people actually had. Final units often ask for a coaching philosophy defended from the reading.
Where students lose points in GM585
The heaviest loss is advice wearing a question mark, where a transcript shows the coach talking most of the time and the other person agreeing. Second is a development goal with nothing that would show progress, so the plan cannot be reviewed by anybody, including the person it belongs to. Third is confidentiality promised by a supervisor who has no way to deliver it. Marks also go where an employee's difficulty is diagnosed as a lack of motivation, which explains nothing and prescribes nothing, where a mentoring program gives a busy mentor no reason to take part, where feedback reads as a verdict instead of something the receiver could act on this week, and where no relationship in the paper ever ends.

Using a GM585 sample the right way
Read a coaching sample by marking who speaks. If the coach's turns run longer than the other person's, the writing has described advice and named it something else. Then check that every goal in the plan has a way of being observed, since that is what separates a plan from a wish. Look at how the paper handles a supervisor's dual role, because a submission silent there has avoided the hardest question in the course. Then work from a real relationship you can describe. Two days is the usual wait on a first example, which is composed to the instructions your own section issued and carries no fee.
How these samples are written
Method, in one line: rubric first, structure from the rubric, evidence current, format exact. Discussion samples read like real posts; unit assignments arrive in submission form. Your free request is drafted against what your classroom actually shows.
GM585 questions, answered
What is the actual difference between coaching and mentoring?
Purpose and time. Coaching addresses a defined area of performance now, and it can be done by somebody who has never held the role. Mentoring addresses a career and a person's judgment over a longer period, and it usually includes access the mentor has and the other person does not. Assessments reward writing that keeps the two purposes separate.
Can a manager really coach a direct report?
Partly, and honest papers say which part. A manager can work on task performance, set expectations and give feedback that helps. What a manager cannot offer is confidentiality or a conversation without consequences, because the same person writes the review. Naming that limit and designing around it earns more than pretending it away.
Why do formal mentoring programs stall?
Usually because nothing was designed after the matching event. Mentors get no time, no preparation and no reason to continue, pairs that are not working have no dignified exit, and nobody measures anything beyond attendance. A program design answering those four points reads as practical, which is what the criteria are looking for.
