AC301 Intermediate Accounting II sample papers, unit by unit

One row of an amortization table is wrong and everything below it inherits the error, which is why AC301 is graded by recomputation. These samples show the schedule first and the entries drawn out of it, in that order.

How this shelf works

Send the exact assignment or rubric from your classroom and a custom sample written to it lands in 24 to 48 hours, the first one free. AC301 is Purdue Global’s Intermediate Accounting II course. It centers on the financing side of the balance sheet, where a single agreement produces a schedule of entries that has to hold together across periods. Searches like "ac 301 unit 4 assignment example", "AC301 sample paper", and "AC301 unit samples" land on this page.

What AC301 is really about

Where the first intermediate course measures what a company holds, this one accounts for what it owes and what its owners have claimed. The material shares a structural feature: most of it unwinds over time. A bond issued at a discount, a lease, a pension obligation and a deferred tax balance are single arrangements that generate entries in every period until they end, and the instrument carrying them is a schedule. Building the schedule correctly is the assignment; the journal entries are usually a short step afterward. This is why the course is graded by recomputation rather than by reading, and why partial credit is thinner than people expect.

Deferred taxes are the concept that separates this course from bookkeeping, because they require holding two sets of figures in mind at once. The book treatment and the tax treatment of the same item can differ, and only some of those differences will reverse. Sorting temporary from permanent decides whether anything is recorded at all, and getting that sort backwards produces a clean, well-presented answer that is entirely wrong. Equity work carries a similar trap in earnings per share, where the denominator has to be weighted for shares outstanding over time and any dilutive instrument has to be tested rather than assumed. Assignments usually want a sentence saying what the resulting figure tells an investor.

What AC301’s assessments ask for

Current and contingent liabilities typically open the term, including estimated obligations such as warranties where the entry follows a judgment. Long-term debt then occupies several units in most sections: issuance at a discount or premium, effective interest amortization across the life of the instrument, early retirement and the gain or loss it produces. Leases usually follow, with classification tested against the criteria the course supplies and a schedule prepared for the term of the agreement. Pensions and other post-employment obligations often appear next, worked through the components of the annual expense. Later units in many sections cover income taxes, equity transactions, and earnings per share both basic and diluted, with a written interpretation attached.

Where students lose points in AC301

The first loss is arithmetic that does not carry: an opening carrying amount in one row that does not equal the closing amount in the row above it. The second is interest computed on the face amount rather than on the carrying amount, which is the difference between the straight line shortcut and the effective interest method the course actually requires. The third is a lease classified without testing it against the stated criteria, so the whole treatment follows from an assumption. Deferred tax entries built on a permanent difference create a balance that should not exist at all. Earnings per share loses points when shares are counted at year end instead of weighted, and when a dilutive instrument is included without checking that it dilutes.

Using a AC301 sample the right way

Take the schedule apart before you look at any entry. Check what the sample used as the rate, what it applied that rate to, and how the carrying amount moves from row to row, because those three decisions produce every figure that follows. Then see how few entries are actually needed once the schedule exists. Read the written interpretation attached to the equity and earnings per share work, since that sentence is where the remaining marks live. Then rebuild everything on your own instrument, as the rate, the term and the payment pattern decide the whole table. A first sample matched to your own instrument is free within 24-48h.

How these samples are written

Method, in one line: rubric first, structure from the rubric, evidence current, format exact. Discussion samples read like real posts; unit assignments arrive in submission form. Your free request is drafted against what your classroom actually shows.

AC301 questions, answered

Why does the effective interest method matter if the totals end up the same?

Because each period's figure differs, and the assignments are graded period by period. Applying a rate to the carrying amount produces interest that changes every row as the carrying amount moves, which is the pattern the course requires. A straight line allocation reaches the same total at maturity and is wrong in every year along the way.

How do I tell a temporary difference from a permanent one?

Ask whether the difference will reverse. If an amount is recognized in one period for books and a different period for tax, it is temporary and creates a deferred balance. If an item counts for one purpose and never for the other, it is permanent and no deferred amount is recorded. Sorting them first prevents most errors in these units.

Can a sample be prepared for my AC301 problem?

Yes. Send the instrument terms, the instructions and the rubric, and the schedule is built on those figures with the entries drawn from it, so every row can be checked against the one above. The first example is free and returns in 24-48h, in the workbook or document format your section requires.
